Trusting hands

An example of a ‘gimmel’ ring (derived from Latin gemelli, ‘twins’) decorated with a ‘fede’ motif (from the Italian ‘mani in fede’ meaning ‘hands in trust’). The rings are made from two hoops that swivel, allowing the clasped hands to open. The hoops could be separated at betrothal and given to the couple. All hoops were reunited at the wedding ceremony.
