After Septimius Severus died in early 211 CE, his sons Caracalla and Geta became joint rulers. They proved incapable of sharing power. Coins produced at Stratonicaea, originally with facing portraits of the two brothers, are examples of the defacement of Geta’s image. His memory was systematically erased (damnatio memoriae) after his murder in December 211 CE at the order of his brother.
