Empowerment

'I am the sugar in the bottom of the English cup of tea', wrote cultural critic Stuart Hall in 1991. In this visual response of a Black Power salute emerging from a teacup, Richard Mark Rawlins simultaneously alludes to the origins of global commerce in the triangular transatlantic trade in sugar and slaves from Africa, and celebrates people of colour wherever they reside in the diaspora.
