Mmakgabo Helen Sebidi is one of South Africa’s best-known artists, renowned for her tightly packed compositions of symbolic figures. In this etching, hands punctuate and connect the people compressed and fused with animal forms, indicating our shared humanity. They are ‘carrying’ one another in hope, following the 1994 election of Nelson Mandela (1918–2013) as President.
